Prioritize a loadable bridge, a hip hinge, and one or two accessories with little knee movement. Hip thrusts, glute bridges, Romanian deadlifts, 45-degree back extensions, cable kickbacks, and controlled abduction work are practical starting points. They do not isolate the glutes perfectly, but they reduce the need for large amounts of squat and lunge volume.
Use movement categories instead of a magic-exercise list
A complete glute plan normally benefits from more than one kind of hip action. A bridge or thrust challenges hip extension strongly near the top. A hinge such as a Romanian deadlift challenges the glutes and hamstrings in a more lengthened position. Kickbacks and abduction exercises add targeted work with less systemic fatigue.
That combination is usually more useful than collecting six nearly identical band drills. The best choice is the version you can set up consistently, perform through a controlled range, and progress without another body part becoming the main limiter.

Exercises with low versus mixed thigh demand
Cable kickbacks, bridges, hinges, and abduction work involve little knee extension, so they normally create less direct quadriceps demand than squats, leg presses, step-ups, and split squats. This is a biomechanical distinction, not a promise about exactly where every person will grow.
Single-leg squat patterns can still be excellent glute exercises. They simply belong in the mixed category. If your thighs grow easily, use fewer hard sets of them and monitor the outcome rather than relabeling them as isolation exercises because you changed your stride.
A four-exercise starting template
Begin with three controlled sets of a hip thrust or bridge and three sets of a Romanian deadlift. Add two or three sets of kickbacks and two sets of abduction. Use repetition ranges that let you challenge the target pattern without technique changing dramatically near the end of the set.
Repeat the template twice per week with sensible variation—for example, hip thrusts on one day and glute bridges on the other. Record repetitions, load, range, and where technique failed. That information is more valuable than judging the session by soreness alone.
What this approach cannot guarantee
No exercise program can guarantee a precise body shape or completely prevent every other muscle from adapting. Bone structure, muscle attachment sites, previous training, nutrition, and genetics influence visible results.
The realistic promise is narrower: we can remove unnecessary knee-dominant volume, select exercises with more favorable demands for the stated goal, and measure whether the plan is moving in the desired direction.
