Rebuild your glutes after long days of sitting

Sitting does not permanently switch off your glutes. But a sedentary routine can leave you undertrained, stiff, and less confident using your hips. The useful response is regular strength work plus more opportunities to move—not endless activation drills.

Where to begin

Three things to get right first

Break the all-or-nothing pattern

Short walks and position changes make the day less static. They support comfort and energy, while your strength sessions do the muscle-building work.

Warm up, then move on

A bridge, hinge drill, or bodyweight squat can help you feel the pattern. Keep the warm-up brief enough that you still have energy for progressive exercises.

Build tolerance gradually

Start with loads and ranges you can repeat without a flare-up. Add work in small steps as your technique and recovery become more predictable.

Why this approach makes sense

Look past the label and focus on what you can change.

Your glutes are not permanently switched off

Relaxed sitting requires little hip-extension force. Standing, walking, climbing, and lifting recruit the glutes again.

Sitting and undertraining are not identical

A sedentary day reduces movement, but glute muscle growth still depends on whether your week includes progressive resistance training.

Movement breaks and workouts do different jobs

Brief walks reduce uninterrupted sitting and may support comfort and health; loadable strength work provides the muscle-building stimulus.

Stiffness is not a diagnosis

A stiff sensation can improve with movement, but persistent pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness should not be reduced to an activation problem.

Persistent back, hip, or leg symptoms—especially numbness, tingling, or pain below the knee—should be assessed by a qualified healthcare professional rather than treated as a simple activation problem.

How to progress

Make one change, then give it time.

    Use a five-minute transition warm-up, then preserve energy for the loaded exercises.

  2. 02

    Train on two non-consecutive days and record the same main movements for six weeks.

  3. 03

    Add repetitions inside the range before increasing resistance or adding sets.

  4. 04

    Break up long sitting when practical, but do not count standing breaks as hypertrophy training.
