Glute anatomy: maximus, medius, and minimus

The short answer

Gluteus maximus is the largest and is a major hip extensor and external rotator. Gluteus medius and minimus help abduct the hip and stabilize the pelvis, especially during single-leg tasks. They work as a system; internet labels such as “upper glute” are useful shorthand, not separate muscles you can isolate perfectly.

Gluteus maximus

The maximus is the most superficial and largest gluteal muscle. Its major actions include hip extension and external rotation, and it becomes especially important when force is required—for example, rising, climbing, sprinting, and loaded hip extension.

What to do: Include at least one loadable hip-extension pattern such as a thrust, bridge, hinge, or squat variation.

Gluteus medius and minimus

These deeper, fan-shaped muscles are important hip abductors and stabilizers. They help keep the pelvis controlled when the other leg leaves the ground. Their contribution changes with hip position, but no small stance change switches neighboring muscles completely off.

What to do: Use a controlled abduction or single-leg stability exercise when it fits your goal and recovery.

Why anatomy changes programming

A program made only of abduction drills misses a major job of gluteus maximus. A program made only of one thrust variation misses other useful joint positions. A small menu spanning hip extension in shortened and lengthened positions, plus optional abduction, is more complete.

What to do: Build around those movement types, then choose versions that are stable, comfortable, and easy to progress.
Myth check

You need a completely separate workout for every part of the glutes.

Different movements bias functions and regions, but the gluteal muscles work together across most lower-body tasks.
