Glute growth after 40 and around menopause

The short answer

Adults can gain strength and muscle after 40 and after menopause. Age may change the rate of adaptation, recovery needs, joint tolerance, and the importance of adequate protein and total training exposure. It does not create an expiration date for glute training.

Train progressively, not timidly

Current resistance-training guidance supports multiset progressive training across adulthood. A 2024 study in postmenopausal and older women found that higher training volume enhanced whole-body outcomes, while still reinforcing that dose must be individualized.

What to do: Begin with technically comfortable movements and progress the challenge gradually.

Protect protein and recovery

Adequate protein, energy, and sleep remain important. Some people may benefit from a longer adaptation phase or more recovery between demanding lower-body sessions, especially when new to lifting or managing symptoms.

What to do: Spread protein across the day and keep at least one recovery day between hard sessions initially.

Let health and symptoms guide adjustments

Bone health, pelvic-floor symptoms, joint pain, hot flashes, medications, and chronic conditions can influence exercise selection and recovery. Generic menopause supplements or hormone claims should not replace individualized care.
