Total body fat and its distribution are different traits. Sex hormones, age, genetics, ancestry, and health all influence where subcutaneous and visceral fat is stored. Training can build the muscle under an area, but it cannot reliably make new fat choose that area.
Why equal body fat can look different
Large studies identify many genetic loci related to waist-to-hip ratio and fat distribution, independent of overall body size. Reviews also describe sex differences in the tendency to store fat around the gluteofemoral region versus the abdomen.
What training can change
A local muscle can grow in response to resistance training. That added tissue can change projection and contour even if fat distribution stays similar. Conversely, weight gain without effective training may mostly change fat mass and not deliver the muscular result expected.
What spot-reduction studies mean
Most simple localized-exercise research does not support dependable local fat loss. A small 2023 abdominal endurance study reported a localized difference under a specific protocol, but it does not establish that glute exercises can direct fat loss—or fat gain—to the butt. The broader claim remains unreliable.
You can squat fat into your butt or burn it from one exact area.
You can train local muscle; precise control of local fat storage or loss is not a dependable outcome.
